Just Moved to a New House in Katy? Why Rekeying is Your First Security Step

Congratulations on the new house! I do a lot of work out in Katy and Cinco Ranch, and the houses there are beautiful.

But here is a scary thought: You don't know who has the keys to your front door.

When you bought the house, the realtor gave you a set. But think about who owned the house before you.

The "Key Count" Reality Check

Here is a list of people who might still have a working key to your new home:

  1. The Previous Owners: Obviously. And their kids. And their relatives.
  2. The Dog Walker: Did they remember to get that key back three years ago?
  3. The Contractors: Painters, floor guys, cleaners. They often get keys to let themselves in.
  4. The Neighbors: "Just in case of emergency" keys often get forgotten.

You are sleeping in a house that five strangers might have access to.

Rekeying vs. Replacing: Save Your Money

A lot of new homeowners think they have to go to Lowe's, buy all new locks, and pay someone to install them. That can cost $500-$800 for a whole house.

Don't do that.

Rekeying is much cheaper.

  • We take your existing locks apart.
  • We change the internal pins to match a new key.
  • The old keys stop working immediately.
  • You keep your hardware (which usually matches your door handles and paint).

If your locks are in good condition, there is zero reason to throw them away.

One Key to Rule Them All

Another benefit of rekeying: Convenience.

I often see houses where the front door key doesn't match the back door, and the garage door uses a third key. It's a mess.

When we rekey your house, we key them alike. One key opens every single door. You can put one key on your ring and throw the rest of that heavy keychain away.

When Should You Do It?

Ideally? The day you close. Before you move your furniture in.

I can meet you at the property right after you leave the title company. It usually takes me about an hour to do a standard 3-bedroom home.

Don't wait until you've unpacked. Security starts at the front door. Call us to get it done right.
