Why We Ask for ID: The Legal Requirements of Unlocking a Car in Texas

It’s 100 degrees in Houston. You’re standing in a parking lot off Westheimer. You just realized your keys are sitting on the driver's seat.

I pull up, get out of the van, and the first thing I say is: "Can I see your ID?"

I know it’s annoying. I know you just want to get home. But I’m not doing it to be difficult. I’m doing it because if I don’t, I could lose my license—or worse, help a criminal.

We Are Regulated by the State

In Texas, locksmiths are regulated by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). We have to pass FBI background checks, carry a pocket card, and follow strict rules.

One of the biggest rules? We cannot unlock property for someone unless we verify they have the authority to enter.

Think about it. If I didn't ask for ID, any stalker, angry ex-spouse, or thief could call me, pay $100, and have me open your front door or your car. I would be an accessory to a crime.

"But my ID is locked inside!"

This happens 90% of the time. Don't worry. Here is how we handle it:

  1. I unlock the car.
  2. I do NOT hand you the keys yet.
  3. You grab your purse/wallet/registration.
  4. I verify the name matches.
  5. Then you get the keys.

If the ID doesn't match the registration, or you "can't find it," I cannot legally let you drive away with that car.

What Proof Do We Accept?

  • Driver's License: Matching the address of the house (for home lockouts).
  • Car Registration / Insurance Card: Matching your ID (for car lockouts).
  • Utility Bill / Lease Agreement: If you just moved into a new apartment or house.

The "Scammers" Don't Ask

Here is a tip: If a locksmith doesn't ask for your ID, be worried.

Unlicensed scammers (the "$15 service call" guys) often don't care who owns the car. They just want your cash. They are operating illegally, often without insurance or background checks.

When I ask for your ID, it means I am a professional. I am protecting your property and obeying Texas law.

So next time you're locked out in Sugar Land or Downtown, have your proof ready. It keeps us both safe.
